Wrote JAMB before? Help the next candidate.
Whether you passed or not, you know something a new candidate doesn’t: where the centre is and how to get there.
Every year, candidates get lost, arrive late, or overpay transport because nobody told them what the centre was really like. You can fix that in 1 minute.
We only need the centre name, town, address, and transport fare. No score, no judgment. 👉 Add your JAMB centre (takes 1 minute)
What to expect in JAMB Mathematics
JAMB typically sets 40 questions for Mathematics. The whole UTME has 180 questions to be completed in 120 minutes, so you have to be fast as well as correct. The exam is computer-based, with multiple-choice questions.
The main topics are number bases, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, statistics, probability, and basic calculus. The questions below cover all of them.
Tip: Practice without a calculator. JAMB has banned calculators in the exam hall in recent years, so confirm the latest rules on JAMB’s official site.

Section A: Number, sets and indices
1. Convert 45 (base 10) to base 2.
A. 101101 B. 101011 C. 110101 D. 100111
Answer: A. 45 = 32 + 8 + 4 + 1, so the binary digits are 1 0 1 1 0 1. That gives 101101₂.
2. Express 0.00364 in standard form.
A. 3.64 × 10⁻² B. 3.64 × 10⁻³ C. 3.64 × 10³ D. 3.64 × 10⁻⁴
Answer: B. Move the decimal point 3 places to the right to get 3.64, so the power is −3: 3.64 × 10⁻³.
3. Evaluate log₂ 32 + log₁₀ 100.
A. 5 B. 6 C. 7 D. 8
Answer: C. 2⁵ = 32, so log₂ 32 = 5. 10² = 100, so log₁₀ 100 = 2. Total = 7.
4. Simplify (2⁵ × 2³) ÷ 2⁶.
A. 2 B. 4 C. 8 D. 16
Answer: B. Add the powers on top: 2⁸. Subtract the bottom power: 2⁸⁻⁶ = 2² = 4.
5. In a class of 30 students, 18 like Mathematics, 15 like English, and 5 like neither. How many like both?
A. 5 B. 8 C. 10 D. 13
Answer: B. Students who like at least one subject = 30 − 5 = 25. Use 18 + 15 − both = 25, so 33 − both = 25, giving both = 8.
Section B: Algebra and coordinate geometry
6. Solve x² − 5x + 6 = 0.
A. x = −2 or −3 B. x = 2 or 3 C. x = 1 or 6 D. x = −1 or −6
Answer: B. Find two numbers that multiply to 6 and add to −5: −2 and −3. So (x − 2)(x − 3) = 0, giving x = 2 or 3.
7. P varies directly as the square of q. If P = 18 when q = 3, find P when q = 5.
A. 30 B. 40 C. 50 D. 90
Answer: C. P = kq². From 18 = k(9), k = 2. Then P = 2(25) = 50.
8. Make x the subject of the formula y = (2x + 1)/3.
A. (3y − 1)/2 B. (3y + 1)/2 C. (y − 1)/6 D. 2(3y − 1)
Answer: A. Multiply both sides by 3: 3y = 2x + 1. Then 2x = 3y − 1, so x = (3y − 1)/2.
9. Solve the inequality 2x − 3 > 7.
A. x > 2 B. x > 5 C. x < 5 D. x > 10
Answer: B. Add 3: 2x > 10. Divide by 2: x > 5.
10. Find the gradient of the line joining (1, 2) and (3, 8).
A. 2 B. 3 C. 4 D. 6
Answer: B. Gradient = (8 − 2)/(3 − 1) = 6/2 = 3.

Section C: Geometry and mensuration
11. What is the sum of the interior angles of a hexagon?
A. 540° B. 720° C. 900° D. 1080°
Answer: B. Sum = (n − 2) × 180° = 4 × 180° = 720°.
12. Find the length of an arc that subtends 90° at the centre of a circle of radius 14 cm. (Take π = 22/7)
A. 11 cm B. 22 cm C. 44 cm D. 88 cm
Answer: B. Arc = (90/360) × 2πr = ¼ × 2 × (22/7) × 14 = ¼ × 88 = 22 cm.
13. A cylinder has radius 7 cm and height 10 cm. Find its volume. (Take π = 22/7)
A. 154 cm³ B. 770 cm³ C. 1540 cm³ D. 3080 cm³
Answer: C. V = πr²h = (22/7) × 49 × 10 = 22 × 7 × 10 = 1540 cm³.
14. A 13 m ladder leans against a wall with its foot 5 m from the wall. How high up the wall does it reach?
A. 8 m B. 10 m C. 12 m D. 18 m
Answer: C. By Pythagoras, height² = 13² − 5² = 169 − 25 = 144, so height = 12 m.
Section D: Trigonometry
15. If sin θ = 3/5 and θ is acute, find cos θ.
A. 3/4 B. 4/5 C. 5/4 D. 5/3
Answer: B. Draw a right triangle with opposite = 3 and hypotenuse = 5. The adjacent side is √(25 − 9) = 4. So cos θ = 4/5.
16. Evaluate tan 60° × cos 30°.
A. 1/2 B. 1 C. 3/2 D. 3
Answer: C. tan 60° = √3 and cos 30° = √3/2. Multiply: (√3 × √3)/2 = 3/2.
Section E: Statistics and probability
17. Find the median of 2, 9, 4, 7, 5, 10.
A. 5 B. 6 C. 6.5 D. 7
Answer: B. Arrange in order: 2, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10. With six numbers, the median is the average of the 3rd and 4th: (5 + 7)/2 = 6.
18. Two coins are tossed together. What is the probability of getting at least one head?
A. 1/4 B. 1/2 C. 3/4 D. 1
Answer: C. The outcomes are HH, HT, TH, TT. Three of the four have at least one head, so the probability is 3/4.
Section F: Calculus
19. Differentiate y = 3x² + 5x − 2 with respect to x.
A. 6x + 5 B. 3x + 5 C. 6x − 2 D. 6x² + 5
Answer: A. Multiply by the power and reduce the power by 1: 3x² becomes 6x, 5x becomes 5, and the constant disappears. So dy/dx = 6x + 5.
20. Evaluate ∫₀³ 2x dx.
A. 3 B. 6 C. 9 D. 18
Answer: C. The integral of 2x is x². Evaluate: 3² − 0² = 9.
How to use past questions to raise your score
- Practice by topic first. Do 10 to 15 questions on one topic until you stop making mistakes in it.
- Switch to timed sets. Aim for about 40 questions in 40 minutes, with the final target of finishing quicker than that so you have time to spare.
- Keep an error notebook. Write down every question you miss and why. Revisit it a day later and again a week later.
- Learn the method, not the answer. JAMB changes the numbers, so memorized answers won’t help but understood methods will.
- Practice on a computer. JAMB is computer-based, so get used to reading and answering on a screen.
