Abolishment of acceptance fee is it possible? talk has been on base on the abolishment of the acceptance fee. The National University Commission has said that it has relayed information to all federal universities to cease collecting acceptance fees from applicants who seek admission into any of the federal universities.
The benefit of Federal University from states or private Universities should be that the student who is admitted are not to be charged of paying acceptance fee.
The executive secretary of the NUC, Professor Abubakar Rasheed, stated this in an NTA discussion programme, Platform, with the theme, “Administration of Tertiary Education in Nigeria: Challenges and projections”.
Base On the issue of tuition fees, the NUC tophat said that private universities charge fees because their existence is based on the profit motive. He maintained that while some state universities charge minimal fees, federal universities charge no tuition fees at all as they are funded hundred percent by the federal government.
List of Federal Universities that are making it hard on students when it comes to payments of acceptance fee are;
University of Ibadan (UI) charged N35,000;
University of Lagos (UNILAG) N20,000;
Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) N30,000;
Imo State University (lMSU) charged N70,000
Lagos State University (LASU) mandated students to pay N20,000 as acceptance fees
Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) N25,000
NUC: All Federal Universities Should Stop collecting Acceptance Fees
It would be recalled that over the years candidates who passed their JAMB examination were made to write a post JAMB entrance test by the universities before being admitted. Apart from the extra financial burden, this created for these prospective students, those who failed the post JAMB risked being denied admission, even when they passed the JAMB examination.
The furor and public outcry against the exercise led the government to cancel it in all universities as of past years ago.
The truth is “One of the factors contributing to poor access to tertiary education is the predatory admission policies being enforced by tertiary institutions, particularly the requirement for payment of non-refundable acceptance fees as a condition precedent for admissions.”
The worst is “Applicants are expected to pay the acceptance fees within a short deadline despite having gone through the tortuous process of paying and sitting for the Senior School Certificate Examinations (SSCE), the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) and making the admission list.
The abolition of acceptance fees in federal will help to attenuate the financial burden of parents who go through excruciating hassles to send their wards to school and also make it easy for an aspirant to always target Federal Universities as their choice.
